Delmore Schwartz 1938
”May memory restore again and again
The smallest color of the smallest day:
Time is the school in which we learn,
Time is the fire in which we burn.” Delmore Schwartz ”The Repetitive Heart”
Delomore Schwartz was a poet, novelist and essayist who made a huge impact on the literary scene with his 1937 collection of short stories, “In Dreams Begin Responsibilities.” Due to drinking, mental/emotional problems and other issues, his writing career rapidly stalled. He eventually taught writing at a number of universities in and around New York. He was friendly with many noted writers. In Saul Bellow’s Pullitzer Prize winning novel, “Humbloidt’s Gift,” the main character, Vin Humboldt Fleisher, is based upon his friend, Delmore Schwartz. Lou Reed was one of Schwartz’ students while studying at Syracuse. He wrote the song “European Son” in response to Schwartz.
